I'm just back from Canberra, visiting four schools in two days. Wonderful committed librarians and teachers in all of them - Radford College, MacKillop College, St Edmund's College and Marist College. I also had a chance to meet the enthusiastic and knowledgeable people from the Canberra branch of the CBC.

Great to hear about your trip to Canberra, Michael. It's a pity, due to the restrictions on posting kids' photos on the internet, that you weren't able to show those seats filled with engaged and enthusiastic students. I've just returned from just over a week's worth of school visits in Far North Queensland, and now have scores of photos of kids enthusiastically getting stuck into a writing task, but I'm unable to share them. Interestingly, further to a comment in relation to your initial post, it's sometimes the kids who have been wary of putting thoughts to paper in class time who respond really well to a visiting author. I've frequently been told by (amazed and pleased) teachers that the first person to put their hand up to share their writing is someone who normally finds it hard to begin, let alone finish a writing task they've set themselves. I'm sure other 'visiting authors' have had similar experiences. Why is this, I wonder?
