John Wentley Takes Charge 8

JFC Westerman, confident, assured, steps up the pace as the end of the chapter looms!

While John was getting his car out, his brother slipped into his laboratory for a few minutes, locking the heavy door carefully as he left. Then he took his seat beside John.

“Let her go, old son!” he exclaimed. “They meet at three o’clock. We ought to be there by three-thirty; they’ll all be present by then!”

The car sped down a maze of narrow country roads for some way before turning into a main road that led to their destination. Although he had driven for nearly four hours that morning, John was enjoying the run through the fresh countryside, showing off his car’s paces. He was perfectly content to sit behind a steering-wheel all day and half the night, if he had the chance.

“Yes, she’s the goods!” announced Bill. “Sixty-five is remarkable for a bus of this size, and she’s kept it up steadily! I’ll be after one of these before long! Better slow down now; there’s a stretch of thirty mile limit just ahead, and we’ll be ahead of schedule at this rate.”

John slowed down as they approached the restricted piece of road.

“This the place?” he asked.

“Yes,” was the reply. “Carry on; I’ll tell you where to stop. Best to put the bus in a car park, I think. They only allow you fifteen minutes in the street, and the police are jolly hot on seeing that you don’t exceed it.”

John grinned. His brother was a remarkable fellow. Here he was about to risk barging in on a Council meeting and creating a disturbance, and, at the same time, worrying over a possible fine for leaving a car in the street. He piloted the car into the car park on his brother’s directions, and they proceeded on foot to the Civic Centre.

'Said' count - nil. 'Non-said', 4 ('exclaimed, 'asked', 'was the reply', 'announced'.)

JFC Westerman has the courage of his convictions.
