How I Write 3 - Music

One of the things about writing on a computer is the ease of slipping in a CD and having music to write by. But it can be a trap. If play songs with lyrics, I find it distracting  at times. The options, though are neat.

Sometimes I like playing movie music. Soundtracks, movie themes, no words but sweeping, emotion laden stuff nonetheless. I love Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who did the music for Errol Flynn's Robin Hood, as well as a swag of other dashing epics. And Max Steiner, who did the score for Casablanca and Now Voyager. Great stuff. Henry Mancini. Was there ever a sweeter, more poignant tune than Moon River?

Opera's good, too. I know it has words, but if I can't understand them, I can't get distracted by them.

I like mambo music  too. Perez Prado is my current top pick. It's got a good beat and you can dance to it.

Comments

I find that even instrumentals can change the tone of my writing depending on the mood of the music. I have to tailor the music to the types of scenes I am writing at the time. It is hard to write sensitive text with heavy metal thumping in the background.
