How I Write 1

I often get young people asking questions about how I write - in a very concrete sense. They want to know about my computer, my workstation, my chair. It's almost as if they feel that if they can reproduce the physical surrounds of a practising writer, the rest will follow.

 

This is my workplace.

It's got everything I need, close at hand. Printer over the computer. Scanner on left hand side. Telephone within arm's reach on the left. A wall, where I can blue-tack useful visual stimulus (if my eye wanders, I'm looking at scenes that could be in my book - clothes, architecture etc). You can't see my filing cabinet, just behind the chair. On top of it is my reference tools (dictionary, thesaurus etc).

It's neat, it's compact, it works.

Very interesting! I can't tell whether you have a view to look at while working - is it easier to write if you don't have outside stimulus? I find it best not to open the blind in front of my desk, simply because I find my concentration lapsing when a car/dog/person goes past. I like how you have tacked up images that are relevant to what you're writing - something I should consider...

I don't have much of a view, which is a mixed blessing. The tacked up images are what catches my eye when my gaze wanders, so the theory is they direct my attention back to my reading. I also sometimes have sticky note reminders around my screen - especially re words/phrases I tend to overuse ...
