“Yes: I’ve heard that kind of thing is required,” agreed John. “Confounded red tape I call it, when you’ve to get official sanction to put up a small building on your own ground, especially when it applies to an out of the way place like this.” 

“That’s my opinion,” declared his brother. “Naturally though, I like to conform to the law all I can, however mad I consider it. Accordingly I put in my application to build a sectional wooden garage and submitted plans in triplicate, besides filling in numbers of forms. The chappie I saw in the local office was very decent, and assured me I’d have no bother in getting permission, for, although this road, for some unknown and totally obscure reason is scheduled under the Development Act, there was no possible chance of its being developed within my lifetime. As you’ve probably found out, it is the least important of three roads that run parallel with each other.” 

“I’ve found that out,” announced John. “I tried the other two first when I was looking for this place. Nobody I asked could tell me where “Stonycroft” was. They didn’t seem to know of it, even. In fact I had to inquire if I was in the right village!”
