Emerging Writers Festival to take place online

The annual Emerging Writers’ Festival will take place online this year, with social distancing measures meaning large events have been canceled.

The Emerging Writers’ Festival (EWF) was set to occur from 16-23 of June this year, in Melbourne. Although the Festival is usually Melbourne-based, people all over Australia will be able to access it digitally this year.

In a statement, artistic director Ruby-Rose Pivet-Marsh said the team was ‘excited to be able to move forward with an online festival, as we feel that now – more than ever – it is vitally important to provide platforms for art and artists and to also provide inspiration and opportunities to our audiences.’

The publishing industry has taken something of a hit recently, with many authors having their release days pushed back to accommodate for the effects of the global COVID-19 health crisis.

The Sydney Writers’ Festival, another event that celebrates both international and local writers, was canceled completely.

The statement explained that the 2020 EWF would ‘challenge what a traditional literary festival looks like’.

It will make use of virtual webinars, live streams, podcasts, and digital projects to ‘deliver engaging arts and literary events’ straight to homes and offices around the world.

It will be accessible anywhere and anytime.

Most excitingly, many of the events in the program will be free.

The festival has previously had a Digital Writers’ Festival and live streaming and, will use this track record to help them put the event online.

The full program will be released on 12 of May at 5 pm via the EWF website.
