David Mitchell's Utopia Avenue slated for 2020 release

David Mitchell's Utopia Avenue slated for 2020 release

Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell will release his long-awaited new book, Utopia Avenue, later this year.

David Mitchell, the esteemed author of Cloud Atlas, will be releasing his long-awaited new novel later this year. Utopia Avenue is Mitchell’s eighth novel.

Utopia Avenue will be his eighth book, and his first released work since Slade House, his 2015 novel.

Utopia Avenue has been called a ‘genre-bending period piece centred on “the strangest British band you’ve never heard of”’.

Few details have been released, but themes of drugs, thugs, madness, love, sex, death, art and fame are all expected to be explored across the novel’s 600 pages.

Entertainment Weekly has said ‘it promises to be the kind of epic puzzle-box narrative that the author’s ardent fans have come to expect and love’.

It follows eponymous band Utopia Avenue on their ‘brief, blazing journey’ across the world after their emergence from the psychedelic scene in 1960s London.

‘Can a novel made of words (and not fitted with built-in speakers or Bluetooth) explore the word-less mysteries of music, and music’s impact on people and the world? … Utopia Avenue is my rather hefty stab at an answer,’ Mitchell said of the new novel, speaking to Entertainment Weekly.

‘Thank you in advance if you read it. I hope you enjoy the ride,’ he added.

Mitchell is best known for his speculative fiction epic Cloud Atlas, which was published in 2004.

The novel featured six interconnected stories that took the reader from past across to a speculative future.

A critical success, Cloud Atlas won the British Book Awards Literary Fiction Award and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

It was made into a film of the same name in 2012, featuring an ensemble cast including several prominent actors, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving and Hugh Grant.
