Quentin Tarantino is releasing 2 new books, including a novelisation of 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

Film director Quentin Tarantino has announced he's signed a deal with HarperCollins to publish not one but two books. The first is a novelisation of the 2019 film Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood penned by the director himself. The second is a non-fiction work titled Cinema Speculation

Released in 2019 and starring Leonardo di Caprio and Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood looked at Los Angeles in 1969, specifically around the time of the horrific murder of Sharon Tate by Charles Manson's followers. Tarantino has said his novelisation will offer 'a fresh, playful and shocking departure from the film.' A pulp-inspired paperback version will be released first, with a deluxe hardcover edition to follow.

The director elaborated in a statement:

'In the ‘70s movie novelizations were the first adult books I grew up reading, And to this day I have a tremendous amount of affection for the genre. So as a movie-novelization aficionado, I’m proud to announce Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood as my contribution to this often marginalized, yet beloved sub-genre in literature. I’m also thrilled to further explore my characters and their world in a literary endeavor that can (hopefully) sit alongside its cinematic counterpart.'

His second book is titled Cinema Speculation, and according to HarperCollins will be a 'deep dive into the movies of the 1970s,' which in particular draws upon Tarantino's admiration of the late New Yorker critic Pauline Kael. The book will be nonfiction, including essays, reviews, personal writing and 'tantalising "what ifs"'.

Tarantino has previously said that he would retire from making films once he reached his 10th one. With Once Upon a Time ... being his 9th, its safe to say he's getting into the writing game early. Both are set for release some time next year.
