'The Queen's Gambit' is becoming a stage musical

The Queen's Gambit, the runaway hit Netflix miniseries based on the 1983 novel by Walter Tevis, is set to become a Broadway musical after the stage rights were acquired by entertainment company Level Forward.

The period drama miniseries follows orphan-turned-chess-prodigy Beth Harmon, who rises to the global competitive chess ranks while struggling with substance abuse. Anya Taylor-Joy won a Golden Globe and Critics Choice award for her role as Beth, and critics praised the show for its depiction of empowered women.

The stage rights for the show have been acquired by Level Forward, best known for their Broadway productions, including a musical adaptation of Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, and Slave Play by Jeremy O'Harris.

Level Forward's CEO, Adrienne Becker, said of the acquisition in a statement, 'It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater.'
