Ngaio Marsh Award long list revealed

The longlist for New Zealand’s Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Novel has been announced for 2020, featuring a range of diverse and exciting stories and heroines to match.

‘In what has been a really unusual year for so many people around the world, we’re really glad to be able to once again highlight some great Kiwi storytelling,’ said the founder, Craig Sisterson.

The shortlist, and eventual winner, will be decided by a panel of local and international judges, who are currently spread across a wide range of lockdown situations across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

They are reportedly very impressed with the variety of entrants for the year.

‘Along with some wonderful debut authors, we’ve had a number of experienced writers from other genres – ranging from kids’ books to literary fiction to playwrighting and paranormal romance – bring their storytelling talents to the crime, thriller, and suspense realm for the first time,’ Mr Sisterson said.

The Ngaio Marsh award, named after New Zealand’s most successful crime writer, Dame Ngaio Marsh, celebrates the best crime, mystery, or thriller novel written by a New Zealand citizen or resident. The novel has to have been published in New Zealand during the previous year.

The shortlist, and eventual winner, will be decided by a panel of local and international judges, and announced at this year’s WORD Christchurch Festival – taking place from 29 October to 1 November.
