Melbourne Writers Festival announce 2019 program

The 2019 program for the Melbourne Writers Festival has been announced, running from 30 August to 8 September. 

The theme for this year is 'When We Talk About Love' - sessions will look at "our love for people, sex, politics and country throug converstations, new writing, music and immersive events.' 

The guestlist includes international Authors such as Tayari Jones, Patrick deWitt, Emiliano Monge, Val McDermid and John Collony, Becky Albertalli and Tishani Doshi. Also dropping in from overseas is Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth (and her recent memoir Girl in a Band), Black Lives Matter activist and author DeRay Mckesson, and Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt. 

Local guests include Richard Flanagan, Yumi Stynes, Don Walker, Kate Torney, Virginia Trioli, Paul Kennedy, Tony Birch, Sophie Cunningham, Tom Doig, Bruce Pascoe and David Ritter.  

Also of note are some musical legends making an appearance, including Paul Kelly, Ben Folds and Tina Arena.

Artistic director Marieke Hardy has said of this years festival: 

"Love stirs our creative spirits, brings us to our knees, inspires songs and sonnets and paintings and volumes, and breaks us into tiny pieces and glues us back together again with gold adhesive.’

‘When we talk about love at MWF19, there will be stories of resilience, of heartbreak and letting go, of family and bodies and home."
