Margaret Atwood's Stone Mattress is getting a film adaptation

Margaret Atwood’s short story Stone Mattress is being adapted for film with Sandra Oh and Julianne Moore set to star in it.

The novel was first published in 2011 in the New Yorker and follows a 60-year-old retired physiotherapist called Verna who goes on a cruise ship in the Arctic Ocean. While on the ship she encounters a man who raped her decades ago and in turn she seeks revenge.

Oscar winner Julianne Moore (Still Alice) will play the role of Verna, and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) will play the role of Grace, a fellow cruise passenger.

The film will be directed by Lynne Ramsay and the script will be written by Ramsay and Tom Townend, with Oscar winner John Lesher and Oscar nominee JoAnne Sellar acting as producers.

According to Deadline, Ramsay praised Atwood stating: ‘I first read Margaret Atwood when I was a teenager, and her work has gripped me ever since. She is simply one of the most intelligent, prophetic and engaging writers around and Stone Mattress is another perfect illustration of that.’
