After completing a degree in journalism and academic writing, in 2010 Sunshine Coast author Lynette Noni donned a backpack and headed abroad for a hard-earned gap year.

Disaster struck when Lynette contracted what she describes as a ‘zombie plague’ which sent her home for a miserable six-months long recovery.

She spent the time reading (who wouldn’t?), but soon burned through her book collection and ran out of worthy reading material. So, Lynette decided to write her own story.

The result was Akarnae, the first instalment of Lynette’s YA fantasy series ‘The Medoran Chronicles’, which Lynette describes as a cross between Harry Potter, Narnia and X-Men. Akarnae follows 16-year-old Alexandra Jennings, who turns up for her first day of class at a new school and unwittingly transports herself to a fantasy world, Medora, where instead she begins to attend a school for teenagers with extraordinary gifts.

The sixth and final instalment in the series, Vardaesia, is due in February. Lynette wrote the book in just 18 days.

In July this year, Lynette’s books occupied all top five spots on the Australia YA bestseller list. Her novel Whisper – a separate story from her fantasy series that follows the story of a mysterious girl locked in a laboratory – topped the list, and the four ‘Medoran Chronicles’ novels followed after, beating out YA heavyweights John Marsden, Morris Gleitzman, and Garth Nix.

To figure out just how she pulled off this feat, three young fans from NSW’s Central Coast Grammar School quizzed Lynette for the Good Reading Podcast.
