Original Tolkien illustrations to appear in new edition of The Lord of the Rings

A new edition of The Lord of the Rings will feature original illustrations by its author JRR Tolkien - the first time his illustrations have been included since the book's release in 1954.

Tolkien created many drawings, maps and sketches during the writing process of The Lord of the Rings, both as writing aids and for his own pleasure. The author was rather shy about his drawing, particularly after some harsh reviews of his illustrations that were included in The Hobbit. While writing Lord of the Rings he commented to his publisher, 'I should have no time or energy for illustration. I never could draw, and the half-baked intimations of it seem wholly to have left me. A map (very necessary) would be all I could do.'

The new edition of The Lord of the Rings, published by HarperCollins, will feature 30 of the artists original drawings, maps and sketches. Its current release date is October 2021.
