Kitty Flanagan wins Booktopia's Favourite Australian Book Award

Kitty Flanagan has won Booktopia’s inaugural Favourite Australian Book Award for her 2019 book, 488 Rules for Life.

The award, which is decided by public vote, replaced the annual Australia’s Favourite Author poll previously run by Booktopia.

The prize comes with $5000 attached for the winner.

Flanagan beat out Just One Wish by Rachael Johns, as well as titles by Heather Morris Cilka’s Journey and The Tattooist of Auschwitz (Young Adult Edition), which all made the top ten out of the 50 books submitted to the poll.

Released in November 2019, 488 Rules for Life sold 99,500 copies by the end of the year according to publisher Allen & Unwin.

Flanagan is a popular comedian who regularly appears on The Weekly with Charlie Pickering and the ABC series Utopia.

She began her comedy career in 1994 after trying various different roles in hospitality, teaching and advertising.

Her career has seen her perform across the world on comedy tours, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival.

488 Rules for Life is her second book. The full title is 488 Rules for Life: The thankless art of being correct.

Her first book, Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies was released in 2018.
