Colleen McCullough's estate is going under the hammer next week

A number items from the estate of Australian author Colleen McCollough will be auctioned Wednesday 30 October at the Hughenden in Woolahra, NSW. Items up for sale include first drafts of Tim and The Thorn Birds, as well as the Royal typewriter she wrote her novels on.

While it might not turn many heads nowadays, The Thorn Birds was quite controversial when it was published in 1977. Depicting the forbidden romance between a priest and a young woman against the backdrop of the Australian outback, it was an instant success. The 1983 mini-series adaptation rocketed those sales even further, cementing The Thorn Birds as one of the best-selling Aussie novels ever.

The estate sale follows a lengthy battle over the estate of McCullough following her death in 2015. Sotheby's Australia are auctioning several items from her estate, including the afforementioned drafts of Tim and The Thorn Birds (including handwritten notes!) which are valued at $5000-$6000 and $20,000-$30,000 respectively. Her Royal typewriter, upon which she wrote The Thorn Birds and many other novels, is worth between $3000 and $5000.

Also available are a collection of drafts, drawings and other posessions never revealed to the public.

An exhibition of these items will be running from 24 October to 30 October, 10am to 5pm, at 30 Queen Street in Woollahra. Following this, the auction will take place on Wednesday 30 October at 6pm, at the Hughhenden Boutique Hotel in Woollahra. A complete list of available items is available here!
