Charlotte Wood's novel, The Weekend, is set for a film adaptation

The film rights for Charlotte Wood’s novel, The Weekend, has been optioned to Brouhaha Entertainment.

The Weekend was first published in 2019 and won the Australian Book Industry Award for the Literary Fiction Book of the Year and was shortlisted for several Australian literary awards.

It is a moving story of friendship, aging and grief which follows three friends who reunite for one last, life-changing long weekend during a Sydney Christmas. Tensions arise as they declutter the beach home that belonged to their fourth friend who died the previous year.

Gabrielle Tana, producer and co-founder of Brouhaha Entertainment, praised the novel and said, ‘I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Charlotte and her wonderful novel. It’s so rich and resonant, its characters so beautifully realised, that they have stayed with me.’

In response to the filmnews, Charlotte Wood said, ‘I am absolutely ecstatic that Gabrielle Tana and her team are to bring The Weekend to life in film. I have been so moved by Gaby’s perceptive enthusiasm for my novel, and my excitement at her ambitious and imaginative approach has grown with our conversations. To combine Gaby’s extraordinary prowess and renown with those of Troy Lum and Andrew Mason has created a staggeringly talented international producing dream team and their collaboration has already vastly broadened the creative scope and potential for this film.’
