Black Cake set for series adaptation

Charmaine Wilkerson’s novel Black Cake is getting a series adaptation with Adrienne Warren set to star.

Wilkerson’s debut novel, Black Cake spans 60 years and follows two siblings whose estranged mother dies, leaving them with a traditional Caribbean fruitcake and a voice recording that details secrets about her life in the hopes that it will help heal old wounds.

Adrienne Warren is who is best known for her Tony Award winning performance in the Broadway show Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed. Warren will play the character of Benny, one of the siblings.

The pilot episode will air on Hulu and will be directed by Andrew Dosunmu who previous film credits include Restless City and Mother of George. Other notable figures who are on board with the development of the project, include Oprah Winfrey who will executive produce the series along with Marissa Jo Cerar.

Warren announced on Instagram her excitement for the project stating: ‘This story is so special.
I can’t wait to share it with you all.’
