bell hooks, author and feminist, dies aged 69

Acclaimed author and activist Gloria Jean Watkins or more widely known by her pen name, bell hooks, has died at the age of 69 at her home in Kentucky.

Her family released a statement announcing her passing, stating, “the family of Gloria Jean Watkins is deeply saddened at the passing of our beloved sister on December 15, 2021. The family honoured her request to transition at home with family and friends by her side.”

She adopted her great-grandmother’s name Bell Blair Hooks as a pen name to honour her but used lower case letters to place emphasis on her message rather than herself.

She was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky in 1952 and published over 30 books that explored the intersectionality of race, feminism and class.

Some of her most notable works include Ain’t I a Woman? which was published in 1981, Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center which was published in 1984 and All About Love: New Visions which was published in 2000.

Her family went on to say in their statement that “the family is honored that Gloria received numerous awards, honors, and international fame for her works as a poet, author, feminist, professor, cultural critic, and social activist. We are proud to just call her sister, friend, confidant, and influencer.”
