Andrea Camilleri, author of Inspector Montalbano series, has died aged 93

Andrea Camilleri, famed Sicilian crime author, has passed away at age 93 after a cardiac arrest last month.

Camilleri was well loved in his hometown of Sicily and abroad as the writer of the Inspector Montalbano series of detective books, which was adapted to an internationally loved television series in 1999.

Based in a fictional Sicilian town and drawing heavily from the news and attitudes of Sicilian culture, the popularity of Inspector Montalbano and it's subsequent TV series brought waves of tourism to Sicily, and showed the once misjudged city in a new light.

Camilleri has published over 25 books in the Inspector Montalbano series, with many of them having been translated into over one hundred languages.

He completed the final book in the series, titled Riccardino, in 2006, and it is set to be published at a later date.
