A bunch of book adaptations are hitting streaming services this October

It's a great month for book lovers and binge watchers! A whole heap of movies and shows based on books are hitting streaming services, and from horror, to historical drama, to thriller, there's something for everyone!

First up is The Haunting of Bly Manor, a followup to the highly regarded The Haunting of Hill House, which modernised Shirley Jackson's 1959 horror novel of the same name. This time around director Mike Flanagan (known for his fantastic Stephen King adaptations) is putting his spin on Henry James' 1898 ghost story The Turn of the Screw, as well as his many other spooky classics. Perfect for Halloween!

The Haunting of Bly Manor is hitting Netflix on October 9. Check out the trailer:

Dropping the same day over on Disney+ is The Right Stuff, based on Tom Wolfe's 1979 nonfiction book about the US Space program. You might also remember it from the Oscar winning 1983 film version. The show is set to follow the seven astronauts in Project Mercury, which was the first US-led human spaceflight program. This first season, launching October 9, takes place in 1959, in the program's infancy. Check out the trailer below:

If you're in more of a movie mood, Netflix has you covered! A brand new film version of Daphne du Maurier's 1938 thriller Rebecca (also known for Alfred Hitchcock's film version) is dropping October 21. It stars Lily James (Yesterday), Arnie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name), Kristin Scott Thomas, and is directed by Ben Wheatley. Watch a trailer below!

Also hitting Netflix later in the month is a miniseries based on Walter Tevis' 1983 book The Queen's Gambit, which follows Beth Harmon, an orphaned chess genius who battles with addiction while becoming a top chess player. Anya Taylor-Joy (best known for her starring role in Emma, a film adaptation of Jane Austen's classic) plays the main character. The Queen's Gambit is launching October 23 - watch the trailer below.

Lastly, if you subscribed to the streamign service Binge, you can watch a miniseries adaptation of Jean Hanff Korelitz' 2014 novel You Should Have Known. Titled The Undoing and starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, the story follows psychologist Grace Reinhart Sachs, whose marriage to fellow doctor Jonathan crumbles after a grisly murder. It's directed by David E Kelley, who previously worked with Kidman on the TV version of Liane Moriarty's novel Big Little Lies. This one drops October 25 -  check out the trailer:
