ARA Historical Novel Prize has become Australia's richest genre-based literary award

The ARA Historical Novel Prize has introduced a children and YA (CYA) category for its 2021 prize, making it the richest genre-based literary award in Australia.

The ARA Historical Novel Prize began last year as a venture by the Historical Novel Society Australasia to celebrate the historical fiction writing, a genre that has gained particular prominance in Australia's literary landscape in recent years. Program Director Elizabeth Storrs says the prize is,

'designed to give historical novelists the opportunity to be recognised in a class of their own, the ARA Historical Novel Prize is a true celebration of historical fiction, and a real opportunity to foster it on a grander scale, and encourage younger readers to embrace the genre.'

Now in its second year, the introduction of a CYA category for to the ARA Historical Novel Prize makes it Australia's richest genre-based literary award, with a total 0f $100 000 awarded to winners. $50 000 will be awarded to the Adult fiction prize winner, with $5000 awarded to the remaining two shortlisted authors, and the CYA winner will be awarded $30 000, with $5000 awarded to the remaining two shortlisted authors.

Submissions for the 2021 prize open 9am Wednesday 14 April, and is open to all authors who are residents or citizens of Australia and New Zealand who have published/are publishing a work between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021.
