2020 Mark and Evette Moran Nib Literary Award Winners announced

This morning during an online celebration, the winners of the 2020 Mark and Evette Moran NIB Literary Award were announced. The NIB is presented annually by Waverley Council, with winners determined by a highly respcted expert judging panel using the specific NIB Award criterion of quality of research, literary merit, readability and value to the community. 

The winner of the $20 000 NIB Literary Award was Rebecca Giggs for her novel Fathoms: The World in the Whale (Scribe). Giggs' debut novel was lauded by judges for its blend of natural history, science and philospohy in a work of narrative nonfiction about the plight of wales in light of environmental change. 

The winner of the $1 000 NIB People's Choice Prize was Suzanne Leal for her novel The Deceptions (Allen & Unwin), which traced the legacy of long-buried family secrets from wartime Europe to modern-day Australia, inspired by a true story. 

Both winners were chosen from a shortlist of five entries, each of which received the Alex Buzo Shortlist Prize of $1 000. Check out the shortlist below:

  • THE STRANGER ARTIST: LIFE AT THE EDGE OF KIMBERLEY PAINTING – Quentin Sprague (Hardie Grant Publishing)
