2020 ABIA Awards: Bluey makes history

The 2020 ABIA awards were held earlier this week in an online service that was streamed via YouTube. This year saw iconic children’s book, Bluey: The Beach, win book of the year, the first time ever that a children’s book has collected the prize.

The main ABIA awards were announced on Wednesday afternoon in a ceremony hosted by musician and performer Casey Bennetto. A range of high-profile guests also attended the online event, including Judy Nunn, Kitty Flanagan, Leigh Sales, Anita Heiss, Julia Gillard and Andrew Daddo. Clare Bowditch also gave a musical performance.

A list of award-winners judged by a group of more than 250 industry professionals was announced.

Bluey: The Beach took out top prize. The children’s book features a family of Australian blue heelers, and was adapted from the popular ABC children’s show that is loved by children and parents alike.

‘We’re thrilled to see Bluey: The Beach win Australian Book of the Year,’ said Kate O’Connor, Head of Commercial and Business Development ANZ at BBC Studios.

‘Penguin Random House and and Ludo Studio have beautifully conveyed the warmth, energy and humour of the series in the ‘Bluey’books, and we’re delighted to see so many Australian families embrace home-grown storytelling, both on screen and in print.’

Bluey: The Beach has sold over 200 000 copies since its November release. There are seven books in the Bluey series, and sales across the whole series is about to hit one million.

A number of other categories were announced, such as Audiobook, General Fiction and Literary Fiction book of the year.
