The Discomfort of Evening by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld
An exploration of sex and sexuality is done in the same tone as a discussion on food. The possible death of her parents is treated no differently. Jas refuses to take off her red coat, self-harms, dry humps her teddy bear and has obstructive constipation. Everything (yes, everything) is discussed. In detail. This book may not be for the faint-hearted, but the gruesomeness is softened by the way it’s written, utilising the honesty and innocence of the narrator. The writing itself is sublime. After a slammed door: ‘Anger has hinges that need oiling’. Persist. Trust the writing. It will see you through.
