Year of the Edit QLD: Brisbane

Any author will tell you the first draft is never the last. Novel writing is a long process, and revising and editing are often the biggest challenges writers face. Year of the Edit will help you understand how to assess the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript, and face down the daunting prospect of killing your darlings. Develop the skills to hone and refine your work through structural and copy editing, and the crucial art of critique. These five intensive masterclasses will help you explore the possibilities in your completed draft, and learn the practical tools to revise and rewrite your work-in-progress in readiness for submission.

Kári Gíslason’s biography, The Promise Of Iceland was released in 2011. Kari publishes scholarly articles and newspaper pieces, and currently lectures in Creative Writing and Literary Studies at Queensland University of Technology.

Year of the Edit is not a beginner course. This course is for writers who are dedicated to polishing their long form work ready for publication. All students participate in group critique on the first 10 pages of their work-in-progress.

Challenge yourself to the ultimate writing journey in Year of the Novel. Over five progressive masterclasses explore all aspects of novel writing, including characterization, narrative structure, and voice. Through it all, you’ll have the expertise of a professional author and teacher to guide you, and the support and encouragement of your peers. Each masterclass provides the opportunity to practice your craft and the skills to stay focused and motivated—make 2013 the year you complete that draft and feel the personal thrill of typing The End.

Belinda Jeffrey’s young adult fiction is acclaimed for its arresting characters and vivid descriptions. Her debut novel Brown Skin Blue was shortlisted for the 2010 WA Premier’s Literary Awards. She has since release two well-received novels, Big River, Little Fish, and One Long Thread (UQP).

Year of the Novel is not a beginner course. This course is for writers looking to challenge their craft through the development of a long form work. All students receive feedback from the tutor on the first 10 pages of their work-in-progress.

Peter M. Ball’s SF and fantasy short fiction has been widely published and in 2009, he won the Aurealis Award for Best Science Fiction Short Story. His faerie-noir novella, Horn, was published in 2009 by Twelfth Planet Press, and was followed by Bleed in 2010.

Year of the Author Platform is not a beginner course. This course is for writers who are interested in developing a sophisticated online presence through multiple forms of digital publishing. All students will come away from the course with a year of online content and a plan for the next year of posting.

Back by popular demand, this masterclass will illustrate the use of exposition and descriptive writing, and how to reveal character, plot, and theme to create an enduring and dynamic narrative. Master storyteller Venero Armanno will guide you through practical exercises and class discussion to provide a more sophisticated understanding of this infamous tenet and how to best apply it, as well as provide critical feedback on a sample of your work.

Venero Armanno is the award-winning author of ten novels, his latest work being Black Mountain (2012). He holds a PhD in Creative Writing and is a senior lecturer at The University of Queensland.

Advanced Short Story Clinic is an intensive weekly writing workshop for short fiction writers who have already completed a number of short stories. This course sets a cracking pace! Develop your short story writing technique through analysing the work of peers and receiving constructive critique on your work, expand your writing arsenal with a rigorous reading and homework schedule, learn the tricks and tropes of the form, and create a polished work of short fiction ready for publication. All participants must submit at least two stories for critique – no exceptions.

Please note: admission to this course is by submission. The submission process is to ensure that all participants are at a similar stage of development; submission will be judged on potential, not current state of development.
