Emma Woodhouse is one of Austen's most captivating and vivid characters. Beautiful, spoilt, vain and irrepressibly witty, Emma organizes the lives of the inhabitants of her sleepy little village and plays matchmaker with devastating effect.
Emma has been adapted for both film and television. In 1972 the BBC adapted it for television with Doran Godwin starring as Emma. In 1995 the film Clueless was loosely based on the book with Alicia Silverstone playing the role of Cher Horowitz (Emma). 1996 saw two films released, one starring Gwyneth Paltrow and the other starring Kate Beckinsale as Emma. The 2009 film starred Romola Garai as Emma.
