The 2005 film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore is the most recent adaptation of the book. The first film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was made in 1971, directed by Mel Stuart and stars Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka and Peter Ostrum as Charlie.
