“Whatever do you do with all that? You were never keen on gardening - have you changed ?” 

“Not exactly, John. But I’ve always liked to see well-kept grounds, although I dislike digging, weeding, and the rest of the horrors that make up gardening as I know it. However, when I moved in here, I had to get a housekeeper. All I could get was Mrs. Crockton, and as she wouldn’t come without Mr. Crockton, I had to sign him on as well. He looks after the grounds pretty efficiently.”

“That explains it,” declared John. “I was rather dubious when I first set eyes on it. Seeing the neat flower-beds and well-cut lawns, I thought I’d come to the wrong place! By the way, I left my car out in the road - what about it?”

“We’ll get it in presently,” Bill assured him. “It won’t hurt out there ; we get quite excited if a car happens to pass along once a day. But talking of garages reminds me – just slip off your coat and let me give you a small injection with this.” He displayed a hypodermic syringe.

“Not likely!” objected his brother. “I didn’t come here to be a subject of your beastly experiments! I had enough of that from you when we were at school and you had the advantage of an extra two years’ growth! But now, since I was twenty-one a couple of months ago, I’m legally my own master!”

“Right-ho!” retorted Bill. “I was only suggesting it for your own good. However, as you refuse to allow it voluntarily, I must take other steps, I suppose.” He deliberately uncorked a small test tube as he spoke. “Now,” he continued. “Stand up and take off your coat!”

Without knowing why, John slid obediently from the bench and stood on the floor. He simply had to carry out the softly spoken commands; no thoughts of resisting existed in his brain. In a second his coat was on the bench.

“Roll up your left sleeve and come over here!”

The orders were obeyed at once. Showing no surprise at his brother’s docility. Bill Wentley took John’s left hand, dabbed a circle of iodine on his forearm and, inserting the needle of the syringe in a fold of flesh gripped by his fingers, he pressed down the plunger.

The effect was comparatively sudden. John jerked his arm away and glared at his brother.

“I thought I said ‘No’!” he exclaimed. “Dash it all, what have you done?”

I was getting ready to do a mock serious dissertation on the cultural signfiers in the modes of address of both characters, but instead I find myself totally gob-smacked. Such a  casual attitude to intravenous/intramuscular drug use in 1938. Did Bill know where that needle had been? I'm glad he had that iodine handy, or things could have looked really iffy.

If my brother came at me with a hypodermic, no matter how powerful his hypnotic suggestion, I would have karate chopped him in the goolies! I'm with you, Michael - gobsmacked. And the horrors of gardening pale into insignificance beside an unknown injection. I wonder if Mr Crockton - the accidental groundsman - will have a dastardly role later in the book???
