Last Tuesday(the 6th) I was in Canberra, and privileged to be part of the discussion group, the Australian Literature in Education Roundtable, convened by the Australia Council for the Arts. I was there both as a member of Ozco's Literature Board, and as an author, but also, as far as I'm concerned, as a parent who's had three kids go through the HSC--the first before the ghastly new English curriculum was introduced, the other two right in the throes of it. You may or may not know that I've written a number of pieces about what I consider to be the anti-democratic, arid, stifling and banal demands of the new 'critical literacies' approach to literature studies in NSW schools, which under the guise of supposed 'intellectual rigour' lays the dead hand of jargon and abstraction on imaginative works. Other states have different problems regarding literature studies in schools--but in NSW, the problem is not in content(not in the works) but the approach.

It's not a question of disliking the works that are studied--far from it, there's a great list of plays, novels, stories, poetry, with a smattering of non-fiction and films(and I don't at all object to films being part of the course). No, what I hate is the straitjacket of theme and issue that is put on the works, and the fact students and teachers _must_ adhere to these. Whether that theme is 'Journeys"--Physical, Imaginative or Inner--or 'powerplay--representations of power', or 'moral order', or ''societal values,', it's all flattening, deadening, a blunt instrument to approach the extraordinary complexities of imaginative works. It also forces conclusions on people--the conclusion being already decided in advance for you. Not only that, the jargon employed is so baffling, the terms so abstruse(and yet, when deconstructed, so banal!) that the time-wasting in class is phenomenal--both students and teachers struggling to make sense of, let alone become inspired by, something that attempts to be a quasi-science and which fails miserably. It means also that then the number of actual literary works you can look at is greatly reduced--in my elder son's Year 12 Extension English class, only _one_ novel (Cloudstreet) was studied, for instance, because of the masses of dull secondary stuff that had to be waded through first! In my younger son's Advanced English class(he's in his HSC year right now), they've also studied only one novel(1984)--and not a skerrick of Australian literature, not one play, not one poem, not one story or novel; nothing, unless you count Paul Keating's Redfern speech! And that's because there was so much secondary rubbish they had to come to grips with first. They get lots of dull assignments asking them things like, ''Look at this text(it was a Coleridge poem, in this instance) and examine three techniques in which the composer has presented perspectives of the concept of imaginative journeys'. I kid you not--this convoluted bit of poppycock was an actual question from a major assessment task he had to do only about 3 weeks ago. Another question, about Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, in his Trials just last week, primly asked students to compare the ''societal values inherent'' in the plays! God in heaven, can you imagine any teenager fired up about that (Except incandescent with furious boredom!)

I'd like to see all that ditched completely in favour of a broad, wide, exciting course that allows students to range very widely, doesn't lay pre-determined conclusions on them, encourages them to challenge themselves, encourages discussion and sharing in class, and allows students and teachers to embark on real voyages of literary discovery, free of the prescriptive, tedious, strait-jacketing stuff.  I'd like to see kids from every background having the same opportunities I had, as a migrant kid from a non-English-speaking background, discovering extraordinary works through my English studies at school, being allowed to explore and challenge, and gaining a literary confidence that turned me into a writer as well as a reader. I think at the moment that opportunity is being lost for many kids--when even the most capable struggle with the 'critical literacies'' approach, and the least capable are completely at sea. And it was in that spirit that I attended the Roundtable, which proved to be a most interesting gathering, with many different points of views expressed. It focussed especially on the way Australian literature was taught in schools and universities, but also discussed the teaching of literature more generally, and the fact that reading for pleasure and joy and discovery should be seen as of core importance.

On the Roundtable were university professors, publishers, critics, authors, school teachers, and other people involved in the literary field. As well as our official discussions, there were lots of informal discussions between sessions and at the dinner hosted in Parliament House the night before. Some interesting themes emerged, one of which, for me as a writer, was rather dismaying: it seems that there are some, maybe many people for whom literature must have a utilitarian purpose--for instance, it must 'foster social justice'', or it must 'teach you morals or lessons''. I reject both, I have to say. I think literature should be allowed to be itself and that we should not impose such things on it. Writers should not have to be  politicians or priests or philosophers. This sort of thing is rarely asked of other artists. Nobody asks that music should foster social justice or teach you to be good, for instance, and nobody surely imagines that having good musical taste or wide musical taste makes you a good person, or that liking crap music makes you a bad person! (At least, I hope so!) So why should this be asked of literature?

So it was great to see at the end when we put a communique together of principles and reccomendations that what came out quite strongly was a strong feeling that literature studies at school should foster a love of reading itself. That it was about pleasure and discovery, primarily. And that though of course great books could stimulate marvellous, passionate and philosophical discussions, that wasn't the only reason  _why_ they were great.  Anyway, I'm not sure what will come of it all, and whether anything will change at the pointy end of things, but at least we had the chance to discuss, and put a few things on the table. While no one could criticise an effort to raising the profile of Australian Literature, especially in schools, I do have some misgivings about the way the debate is being framed. How many actual, practising classroom teachers were part of this Roundtable, for instance? With respect, I find it difficult to understand how a debate on the current state of Australian Literature in schools can be accurate and up to date without a sizeable, representative participation from those professionals who are involved in schools on a day to day basis. This area - as with much of the current discussion re education - can be the realm of much misunderstanding, misapprehension and anecdote masquerading as evidence.

Apologies if that sounds like a rant. I simply get dismayed at the level of the debate whenever education is the topic. Some time ago I heard, on the radio, a prominent academic decrying the fact that Shakespeare is no longer taught in secondary schools in Australia. This bald statement went unchallenged, and was supported by a chorus of tut-tuts and mutters about the appalling state of teaching in the country, despite it simply being untrue.

To get back to Sophie's points, I think some of difficulty with Literature in schools is the part that assessment plays in the whole thing. Because schools are required to come up with some sort of empirical, numerical assessment for each student, it changes everything - especially in senior years, where university entrance scores are so important. Work done by students has to be able to be scored in ways that are equitable and verifiable. Trying to teach literature in that context can be difficult, and so many of the things teachers may want to do simply don't fall into assessment regimes.

I feel sorry for teachers, having to deal with so many competing demands.

I agree, Michael. In fact, there were two currently practising classroom teachers and one ex-classroom teacher participating in the roundtable. as well, there were lots of university teachers and people who had researched the situation very carefully too. People were VERY passionate about the need to support teachers, and I think the statement does reflect this. This was in NO way a teacher-bashing exercise, the efforts were aimed at getting the writers of curricula to realise that they were making things very hard for both students and teachers.

Literature is about the love of the ideas and the divergent directions that books can point readers to. It's about discovery and passion.

My son never read at school. I had to read his texts and interpret them for him to regurgitate for school assessments and exams. I often dispaired of him.

As soon as year 12 finished, my son surprised me. He headed for my bookcase. He asked what books should he read, now that he was free. He read Dracula first. Went onto Orwell's 1984 and Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy. He continues to make reading and discovery a part of his life.

He was one of the lucky ones. One of the post curricula survivors. He knew that books held special gifts, otherwise why would my bookshelves be loaded with books and no holiday be complete without the pleasure of a book or two.

Yes, I think Michael's point about the demands of assessing things is very important - it must have big impacts on how things are taught. The creative writing component of the four unit extension English in the NSW HSC is probably in some ways an example of this - the students have to write quite a long kind of reflection statement on how they went about writing their creative bit and while some writers may be perfectly at home with this, I know that I, for example, if I was doing it, would have written the most hopeless reflection statement and would have got a terrible mark as I'm afraid it's just not how I work/write at all! (I'd stop writing if I reflected too much on it.) But at the same time I can understand, from the point of view of assessment, the reflection statement is some way of trying to make sure it's the student's own thoughtful work etc etc Hmm.

I agree very much with what Sophie has said. Assessment has always been part of the educational system, there's nothing new there. What has changed is the attitude of curricula setters to the teaching of literature. I went to school in 50s and 60s England, my daughter went to school here, taking her HSC in 2001. The contrast couldn't be more acute. I was appalled not only at the narrow range of literature to which she was exposed but also the jargon in which questions were couched. Big business leaders couldn't have confused the issues more.
People say children need to absorb so much more these days. Poppycock. If they're given a solid grounding in the literary canon, with a core of the literature of their own country, and guidance in interpreting it, they'll be able to absorb and interpret anything.

I agree absolutely that the primary purpose of any English literature course is to help students develop a love of reading and a desire to continue reading long after high school or uni. Learning to appreciate the use of language, discovering differences between their own culture and others through that culture's literature, discovering the joy of a well spun yarn. These things are all of paramount importance. I'm sure a lot of writers would be dismayed at the thought that their work was being used in the way described in the article. I would.
